Day 5: March 25, 2024
Woah... today was a very busy day... bit rainy but that didn't dampen our spirits.
First off was a drive to Derry on the north west side of NI through some exceptionally beautiful scenery.
We dropped off at the Guildhall along side the River Foyle and Emma took us in to see the incredible organ that was in the main hall.
We met Ruairi our guide for the morning who walked us round the city walls and took us into Bogside all the while explaining the historical and political history of the area. Really hard to imagine that 30 years ago the whole town basically was a war zone. It was very interesting hear Ruairi compare his childhood to that of his 5 years old little boy.
After some lunch we decided to take the beautiful scenic route towards the Giants Causeway as Emma wanted to take us to Downhill Strand... a beautiful stretch of beach on the Atlantic coast where we all disembarked the coach and went running around like crazy things playing on the sand and in the water. This beach was also a filming location on the Game of Thrones series... where Melisandre burnt the 7 gods of Westeros and danced around in the flames.
Back on the coach, exhilarated if a little damp... we continued on to the causeway with a brief stop at the Bushmills old distillery for a photo.
We had plenty of time to enjoy the giants causeway before carrying on to our final stop of the day at the Dark Hedges... another G.O.T. iconic filming location... the road to Kings Landing.
back at the hotel, we had a lovely dinner of chicken curry or spaghetti bolognese followed by brownies and ice cream!
