After a some sleep and our first Berliner breakfast we are ready to explore Berlin with our local guide, Luca. Amelia showed us the highlights of midtown Berlin: the prestigious boulevard “Unter den Linden” with beautiful palaces, theatres, museums and villas, the restored Palace of the Prussian emperors, of course the Brandenburg Gate with the US embassy, the “Reichstag” and the Holocaust Memorial right next to it. Our city tour ended at Check-Point Charlie and an impression what it meant to live in a divided city. We visited the Checkpoint Charlie Museum. Another very emotional museum in the afternoon: the Jewish Museum of Berlin with its unique architecture – it was about Jewish religion and culture, of Jewish history, the holocaust and nowadays Jewish life everywhere in the world, interactively presented. We could have stayed for hours, 1½ hours were simply not enough. Later we found an air conditioned shopping center and skipped the Berlin scaventure: simply too hot - 98F. After another typical German dinner we put our hot feet into a nice and cool fountain, before we did a brief city walk along the Spree River and to the Hackersche Höfe, a stylish quarter that luckily was not bombed during WW2.
