Belgium, France & Switzerland

Our lovely driver Olivia collected us from the hotel, and we drove high up into the hills through the olive groves, cypresses and tiny Provençal villages to visit the Florian candy factory. We spent a lovely morning learning how candied fruits are made, crystallised violet and rose, and sampled lots of specialities such as chocolated coated oranges, rose syrup and lemon jam. Another windy journey down the other side of the hills took us to the village of Saint Paul de Vence, home to many artists, notably March Chagall who is buried in the churchyard. We made a quick lunch stop and wandered up and down the narrow streets filled with craft shops and artists selling their work. We drove back down to Nice and dropped off the beach goers, who had a great afternoon cooling down in the Mediterranean and catching the sun. Olivia took the rest of us up to the Chagall Museum, set in a beautiful peaceful garden with the lavender in bloom. We had a restful visit contemplating the paintings, mosaics and stained glass collection. There was some free time before dinner to wander around the old town centre, have a last gelato or sorbet, and sat at the busy cafés. Olivia then drove us back to the hotel. Our last evening in France, tomorrow Switzerland beckons.
