The group left the hotel early bound for Fort Augustus in the Great Glen! We travelled on country roads with impressive scenery to reach Fort Augustus mid-morning. The group had an hour long cruise on Loch Ness, possibly the most famous loch in Scotland, reputedly home to Nessie, the Loch Ness monster. Then there was some free time to explore the village and have some lunch. Thereafter it was another hour onto Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, home to around 70000 people. Located on the River Ness, the city has a nice vibe, attractive surroundings and is increasingly popular with international visitors! The last scheduled stop on the day was at Culloden Battlefield. The last battle on British land took place there in April 1746 and was the culmination of a 60-year struggle, the Jacobite rebellions, for the royal line of the Stuarts to take the English throne back from the incumbent monarchs. The Jacobites were heavily defeated and the defeat marked the suppression of the clans and culture for a century! Then it was back to Tomintoul for dinner, repacking and maybe a wee dram of whisky!
