London, York & Edinburgh

It was a much earlier start to the day with a 0645hrs departure to head into London to catch the train from Kings Cross railway station north to the city of York. We arrived at the train station with plenty of time to spare despite the early morning traffic. After boarding the train, everyone settled in for the journey which would take just less than two hours. The train journey itself travelled through lovely green countryside and the occasional town enroute to York. We arrived late morning into York and loaded our bags onto a waiting coach, before then walking the short distance into the pedestrianised centre of York. The city was first founded by the Romans in 71AD as a city called Eboracum. It was subsequently seized by Vikings in 866AD and the Viking history is still part and parcel of the city’s landscape. York has a beautiful Minster which dates back to the 13th century and is almost unique in Great Britain in still retaining most of its original city walls from the 14th/15th century. The group had a walk on the walls, some time for lunch and then a visit to the impressive Minster. The sun shone but the wind was strong and chilly. We then headed on to the group hotel which lay close to Bradford for dinner and a good night’s rest!
