Day 16: July 2, 2024
The beach, the mountains, chocolate … what more could you ask for?
Today we had a later start and drove to Lucerne — a busy yet charming small city with about 60,000 people. We first stopped to see the famous lion monument (the Löwendenkmal), which commemorates the Swiss guards that were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution. They were trying to protect the royal family when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris. We then walked through the city until we reached the waterfront and walked over the famous Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke). It’s 670 ft long and was constructed in 1333. It was designed to defend the city and it served to divide the river (Reuss) from the lake.
We kept walking along the water until we reached Ufschötti beach to take a dip in the very cold (but refreshing!) Lake Lucerne.
Lunch and free time followed, as well as picking up our freshly engraved swiss army knives — great souvenirs for our short but sweet time here in Switzerland.
We had Älplermagronen (Swiss Alpine Macaroni and Cheese) for dinner and celebrated Eva’s birthday!
