Day 7: June 23, 2024
This morning, we drove a short distance over to Rothenburg — a medieval town with lots of charm! It’s a walled city so as soon as we arrived there, Viorel parked the bus and we walked through the walls to see the town. We broke off for lunch and free time In the main square, in front of the Rathaus (Town hall). Some of us tried a local delicacy called “Schneeballen” or “snowballs” in English — it was a bit dry but perhaps better with a cup of hot chocolate!
From there we drove to Dachau, the first Nazi concentration camp in Germany. It opened in March 1933 and remained open until 1945. It used to be an old ammunition factory and this is the place where Jewish and political opponents were isolated as being part of the Hitler Regime. More than 200,000 prisoners were here and more than 31,000 prisoners have been recorded to have died here. We paid our respects and walked around. It was a very moving afternoon.
In the evening, we had (what we hope is our last!) sausage and mashed potato dinner in the centre of Munich. Our hotel is farther out in the countryside — a good place to relax after a long day!
