Day 9: March 14, 2025
Good evening from Munich. We've ended the tour with a bang today - starting with a tour of the city from our expert guide Michael. On the way to meet him we took a bonus stop in the English Garden to see the famous Eisbach wave - where a couple of surfers were showing off their skills! Michael's tour was fascinating - especially in terms of the rise of the 'Third Reich' under Adolf Hitler in the 1930s, and its horrific consequences. We also saw many older buildings and heard about the history of Bavaria and the establishment of Munich as a city some 800 years ago... It's a young city by European standards! We finished the tour at the BMW headquarters, and the group enjoyed looking at the range of cars, and sitting on the motorcycles during our free time for lunch! We then visited the Dachau concentration camp, to see for ourselves the atrocities of the Nazi regime. The visit included a film screening, with interviews from survivors - it was a deeply moving and thought-provoking visit, and we took time to reflect on it together once back on the bus. We then headed back into central Munich, and took some free time to shop and explore around the magnificent Marienplatz square - with many of the group taking the opportunity to watch the centuries-old Glockenspiel clock strike at 5pm. Dinner tonight was delicious schnitzel, followed by creamy vanilla pudding with raspberry puree. It was then back to the hotel to unwind over a game of cards in the lobby. Goodnight!
