This morning at 8 we were all downstairs having breakfast and by 9 o’clock we were already on our way to Rothenburg. Rothenburg is very cute little town in Germany, similar to Heidelberg and very picturesque. It’s a walled city so as soon as we arrived there, Goran parked the bus and we walked through the walls to see the town. In the main square we could see the Rathaus (Town hall) and it’s two buildings, one with gothic architecture and a tower from where sentries warned the city of fires and enemies, built in 1250, and the renaissance style building built in 1578. In the square there’s also St. George’s fountain, it holds 26,000 gallons of water and it’s 26ft deep. Here’s where there was hangings during the Middle Ages. From there we drove all the way to Dachau, the first Nazi concentration camp in Germany. It opened in March 1933 and remained open until 1945. It used to be an old ammunition factory and this is the place where Jewish and political opponents were isolated as being part of the Hitler Regime. More than 200.000 prisoners were here and more than 31.000 prisoners have been recorded to have died here. There used to be 15 barracks, where prisoners lived. They were designed to accommodate 208 prisoners but towards the end of the war some of them had up to 1600. A very moving afternoon indeed.
