Day 13: June 15, 2019
This morning we had breakfast at 7:30 and by 8:15 we loaded our bags onto the coach and left Rome.
Our first stop was Orvieto which is a small town up in a rocky mountain. The city dates back to Etruscan and Roman times so it’s a really old town! The Pope Clement VII took refuge here in 1527 when Rome was sacked by the french.
The cathedral of Orvieto has an amazing facade and has amazing frescoes from the 15th century Inside. The cathedral itself started being built in the 1290 and it took 300 years.
We took a packed funicular to the top of the mountain and then we took an even more packed bus to the main square!
There’s where we saw the cathedral and we set a meeting point.
In Orvieto you can also visit il Pozzo di San Patrizio which is a well that was built to supply water in case of an attack. It’s 196 feet deep and has 248 steps. I quickly went down to take some pictures and It’s freezing down there!
I met everyone by the cathedral and from there we walked back to the funicular station.
We have had a bit of a situation with the air conditioning on the bus so I thought it was a good idea to treat everyone to a typical Italian gelato on the way. It didn’t last long but at least it cooled everyone down for a few minutes! ;)
From there we got back on the bus and the ride to Florence was a quick two hours.
We are staying at the hotel panorama, I have stayed there before and I love it! Not only is very central but it has a very nice vibe and definitely a great view from the breakfast room!
