Day 11: June 13, 2019
This morning we had breakfast at 7:30 and at about 8:20 am we starting getting on the bus where we met Denis, our new driver that will be with us until we reach Paris in a few days.
Today we had another long day on the road. And a little problem with the air conditioning on the bus...! We drove from Venice to Rome stopping a couple of times to stretch our legs, the first stop was in Bologna and the second one, before we arrived in Rome, was near Florence.
Denis dropped us in the city centre where we started our walking tour. I much say that, specially today, everyone has been amazing! It was a long and hot day on the coach but everyone understood it was one of those things that happen on tour and cooperated incredibly well.
We started in Piazza Navona which used to be a stadium, built in 86 AD. Athletic meetings were hosted here for four centuries and after that it continued to be an arena of games and festivals.
We also saw the famous main fountain by the architect Bernini representing four rivers.
From there we walked to the Pantheon. Is an astonishing building with amazing architecture. It was built in the 27BC and it’s heigh is the same as it’s width (140ft). There’s a hole in the dome which is it’s only source of illumination.
We also stopped by la Fontana di Trevi of course! It might not be the most impressive of fountains but it definitely is one of the most famous ones. It was completed in 1762 and designed by Nicola Salvi.
I think most of us want to come back to Rome because everyone tossed a coin into the fountain. Did you know it was to be done with you right hand over your left shoulder and into the fountain? It has worked for me over the years!
Our final stop before we reached dinner was at the Spanish steps by the Spanish Square, we climbed the 138 steps and from there we we walked to our WELL DESERVED dinner!
Tonight we had lasagna, it was incredibly nice, I went back to check if everyone enjoyed it and everyone’s plate was empty! I guess it was a yes!
