Day 4: June 13, 2022
We began the journey today taking the bus from Barcelona to Valencia, the art and science center of Spain. On the way, we discussed the history of Spain, including the “fortalezas”, or forts built during the Spanish Inquisition, which we saw on the ride. We also discussed the cuisine of Valencia, a city known for its horchata, oranges, and most importantly, its paella! We also listened to our favorite Spanish music on the way past the rolling hills and orange fields outside.
In the older, historic side of Valencia, we stopped at the market to explore local foods—students were able to explore the busy food stands and pick their lunch. Then, we took the bus to Valencia’s newer downtown area and examined the architecture made by Calatrava (the same architect who made the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in Dallas)! Students went in the Oceanográfico building, observing animals like sharks, dolphins, and penguins.
On our way back to the magnificent city center, students were able to go inside one of Valencia’s fortalezas and explore the medieval architecture. Then, they ate an authentic paella dinner, and we ended the great day at our hotel!
