The group left in good weather from the hotel in Antrim and headed towards Belfast city centre and specifically the Titanic Experience. The museum explains the history of Belfast, the shipyards, the ship and ultimately the sinking of the Titanic. The ship was built in Belfast but sank after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage to New York with a huge of life. The group then met up with a local guide, Nollaig, who explained more about the city’s history, its districts and its universities. We then drove through the nationalist Falls Road area, stopping at a Peace Wall and then down unionist Shankhill Road to better understand the nature of the sectarian history of the city. Belfast has suffered a difficult period known as The Troubles with loyalist support for being part of UK as oppose to nationalist support for being part of Ireland. The story is a complex one and the group were able to understand the issues a little better as a result of the tour. There was a bit of free time to grab some lunch near to City Hall in Belfast, and then we drove south to Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland. We were to drive along the River Liffey in th3 centre of the city before heading to dinner in Taylor’s Three Rock, and then onto the hotel near the ring road to check in!
