Day 5: March 30, 2025
The group had an earlyish breakfast at their hotel, the Richmond Arms,, in Tomintoul and then headed onboard the coach to travel Fort Augustus in the Great Glen. Fort Augustus sits on the shoes of Loch Ness and after a bit of free time to explore the town, the group joined a boat cruise on the loch. Loch Ness is roughly 22 miles long and is rumoured to be the home of the Loch Ness monster, Nessie! After the cruise we drove along the banks of the loch to Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands. The group had a chance to explore the lovely city which sits on the River Ness and enjoy a typical Highland town environment. Just outside the city lies Culloden Battlefield, where the last battle on British soil took place in April 1746. The Jacobite army from Scotland was defeated by the English which subsequently led to a suppression of the Scottish clans and culture for the next century. On the way back to the hotel we made a brief stop innCarrbridge to see the old stone pack-horse bridge which dates back to 1717! Dinner was taken at the hotel and then a chance to repack ahead of the next day’s departure!
