The group had a good rest and we left in good time to meet our local guide, Jaqi, in the centre of Edinburgh. The group got to see the Georgian side of town which dates back to the 1760’s. The Old Town had become too dirty and overpopulated so a whole new area of the city was built for those who could afford to move out. The Old Town is centred on the Royal Mile, a street which runs from the Palace of Holyrood (the official residence in Scotland of the British monarchs) up to Edinburgh Castle! We stepped off the coach near Greyfriar’s Kirk, an important graveyard and home to Greyfriar’s Bobby, a loyal dog who sat by his master’s grave for 14 years! The guided tour finished up at St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile and the group had some free time before meeting up to visit Edinburgh Castle.the castle sits atop an old rocky crag, and dates back in portions to the 12th century but has more of a medieval history and has been the base for Scottish kings for centuries. After the castle visit there was more free time before a ghost tour to learn more about the grim, grisly and ghostly side of Edinburgh’s history. Dinner was a short walk before heading back to the hotel to repack ahead of travelling to the Scottish Highlands the next day!
