Insider's Paris

We started today with a food tour in the St Germain des Prés area. Our 3 guides took us round a selection of different food stores where we sampled cheese, caramels and sticky cakes from Brittany. We also saw the oldest café in Paris, the Procope, and next door where they practised the guillotine before chopping off the King's head in the Revolution, the beautiful painted interior of the local church from the 12th century, and finished in the market. After stocking up on a selection of food and drink from the grocery store, we walked up via Saint Sulpice church (where the Da Vinci code was set) and to the glorious Luxembourg Garden for a picnic. More cheese, cold meats and cakes. But some fresh fruit for balance. Free time in the afternoon so some people shopped, others did museums, and some had quiet time back at the hotel. We regrouped for dinner, which was a delicious couscous (semolina, vegetables in sauce, meatballs and accompanied by sweet golden sultanas and chick peas). Another sticky cake finished off the meal. We've eaten a month worth of sugar today! Afterwards one group headed back to the hotel, and the rest went up the Eiffel Tower. Some people even went to the famous jazz club Le Caveau de la Huchette, where there was a tribute act to Frank Sinatra. A busy but fun day. Bonus, it didn't rain once !!!
