Today we set of for the south of Italy, driving down towards Naples. We passed Montecassino and the Reggia of Caserta on the way, and had a wonderful view of Mount Vesuvius as we approached the bay of Naples. When we got to Pompei we visited a shop where local craftsmen make cameos, and met our guide for the tour of the ancient ruins of the city. Our guide Enza really brought the ruins to life as she took us to many different sights and we learned a lot about daily life in Roman times. We then had a delicious lunch, where we tried pizza napoletana which is considered the best pizza in Italy! Then we drove to Sorrento, enjoying the beautiful views of the coast along the way as we passed lemon and orange trees. Once in Sorrento we checked into our hotel and headed down to the beach for a walk and swim before dinner. We had a fantastic view of the sunset from the terrace of the hotel during dinner. In the evening, we headed to the city centre to watch the Good Friday processions, a local tradition which is unique to this area of Italy. It was fascinating to see, and we also had a gelato before heading back to the hotel.
