Today we left Paris and met our driver for the next few days, Gints. We spent the morning in the bus, travelling to Arromanches on the Normandy (northern) coast of France. After a lunch break the group visited the D-Day Landings Museum to learn about the events fo 80 years ago on 6th June 1944, when the allied troops landed in Normandy (US, Canadian, British and free French forces) to begin to reclaim France from the Nazi invasion. Afterwards we drove to the American Military Cemetery just behind Omaha Beach, which was a moving experience for most people. Finally we visited Omaha Beach itself, where the American troops landed and where there is now a memorial. Then we drove to our hotel in St. Malo, Brittany, checked in and then went to dinner at a nearby restaurant. Tomorrow afternoon the itinerary includes a scavenger hunt where the students take photos of various items, but with the teachers we decided to do this tonight, after dinner and then the students would have free time tomorrow afternoon. The students took on this task in the old walled city with gusto (possibly incentivised by the prize Mr. Dittus offered for the frist team to complete it!).
