Today we had a booking at the Château de Versailles at 10am, and last month a city guide gave me a tip that if I ever had a morning booking for Versailles, it was much nicer to visit the gardens before seeing the Château, as they were cooler and not crowded. I had only ever taken groups in the afternoon before, but I remembered this advice and asked the coach to come early - we left our hotel at 7.30am and arrived at Versailles just after 8.30am. The gardens were lovely at this time in the morning - lots of shady groves, and barely anyone there, so lots of possibilities for good photos! After an hour in the gardens we met again to meet with the city guide, Désirée, who gave the group a tour of the inside of the Château. There was some time for photos and shopping before meeting again to take the RER train into the center of Paris. This afternoon the itinerary included a walking tour of the Marais district of Paris (because we cannot do a sightseeing coach tour at the moment, as so many roads are closed for Olympic venues). The teachers had decided that this would not be of interest to amny of hte students, so made it optional - in the end only two of the teachers went on this tour, and other people went to the Eiffel Tower and other sights or went shopping. We met again for dinner at Flam's, a restaurant that serves Flammkueches, a speciality from Alsace in the east of France - they look like thin pizzas, but don't taste like pizza (there is no tomato on them). After dinner we had some free time in the Châtelet area before returing to our hotel.
