Walk the largest Dominican city, Santo Domingo, also the capital of this Caribbean country. Located by the sea, Santo Domingo boasts a well-preserved colonial district you can explore on foot. Feast your eyes on the 16th-century buildings, palatial houses and beautiful churches. See the oldest cathedral built in the Americas, Catedral Santa Maria la Menor, and Alcazar de Colon, America’s first castle.

Founded in 1993 by Sonia Hane, the Orfanato Niños de Cristo cares for 150-200 orphaned Dominican children, ranging in age from six months to 20years old. The children hail from all over the Dominican Republic and come from a variety of backgrounds—some were abandoned or lost both parents. Through the love, care, nurturing and protection of the orphanage staff, these children find family at the Orfanato Ninos de Cristo.

Volunteering at the orphanage, you will teach English to the children, also joining them in arts & crafts and playing games. We encourage you to bring donations, including notebooks, construction paper, children’s scissors, folders, pens, batteries, molding clay, tape, umbrellas, children’s rain ponchos, backpacks, sporting goods, calculators, dominos, or anything else school-age children might need.

We recommend wearing sturdy shoes as you traverse the Padre Nuestro Ecological and Archaeological Jungle Trail, taking you through the tropical jungle and limestone landscape of Parque Nacional del Este. You'll see butterflies, tropical birds, as well as impressive underground, freshwater caverns. Once you reach the end, visit the gushing springs secluded inside the caves.

Spelunk down into the Cueva de Chico, a large cave featuring a stunning underground lake at its core. A significant collection of large ceramic artifacts remain in the cave from the pre-Hispanic era, when the indigenous people began using the lake as a water supply. Peruse through 26 petroglyphs—or rock engravings—upon entering the cave, and uncover the indigenous history of the Dominican Republic.

Enjoy Campo Padre Nuestro, in the village of Benerito (10 minutes from Bayahibe). Inhabitants were relocated to this new settlement when the National Park was first inaugurated. You'll find a vibrant community and can visit a jewelry project sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which helps local women to earn an income.

Completed in 1982, Altos de Chavón is a replica of a 16th-century Mediterranean village—built almost completely from stone and overlooking the magnificent Chavón River. It is the biggest attraction in La Romana, Dominican Republic. Enjoy the sights and visit the numerous workshops from local Dominican artists.

Two hundred forty meters of the 800-meter underground cavern are open to the public, in the more than 100,000-year-old Cueva de las Maravillas. Peer down deep below the Earth's surface, as you visit these awe-inspiring caves, located in eastern Dominican Republic. See stalactites and stalagmites and an underground lake, as well as hundreds of ancient Taino Indian cave paintings.
