While much of the city was destroyed in an earthquake in 1755, the buildings that survived have been remarkably preserved and will leave you in awe.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are five landmarks you shouldn\u2019t miss when you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.ca\/pas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">visit Lisbon<\/span><\/a><b>:<\/b><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #f7941d;\">1 \u2013 Belem Tower<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/P-Belem.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8693 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/P-Belem.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"837\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First built in 1519 as a defense system under King John II, Belem Tower has alternately served as a fortress, a prison, a customs control center, troops\u2019 quarters, and an exhibition hall. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It played an important role in the era of Portuguese navigation, which has earned it the designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (it\u2019s also a hop, skip and jump away from the incredible <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travel-in-portugal.com\/attractions\/monument-discoveries.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monument to the Discoveries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, tourists can wander through the tower and up the top for gorgeous views of the ocean, and a tour of the beautiful building that explorers got to glimpse as they landed in Portugal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #f7941d;\">2 \u2013 Jer\u00f3nimos Monastery<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/P-Jeronimos.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8694 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/P-Jeronimos.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"837\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another UNESCO World Heritage Site is just down the street from Belem: The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/jeronimos-monastery\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeronimos Monastery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally opened in 1495, this beautiful, ornate monastery was once a refuge for mariners. Sailors would stay there before a long journey to pray for safe passage, while monks provided them with spiritual guidance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monks left the monastery in the 19th century, and now the landmark is a tourist destination that also contains the Maritime Museum. Enjoy walking through the cloisters and the elaborately carved arches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #f7941d;\">3 \u2013 Tram 28<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/P-Tram.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8695 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/P-Tram.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"837\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the six tram lines still in operation in Lisbon, Tram 28 is the most famous. Beginning in 1873, trams became a common way to traverse the city. Now, the metro has replaced many of them, but trams still remain in areas where the typography of the city won\u2019t allow for a metro line. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cars you\u2019ll see when you ride the tram are almost 100 years old \u2014 more modern cars wouldn\u2019t be able to navigate the sharp turns and thin roads. Tram 28 in particular provides you with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lisbonguru.com\/tram-28-discover-lisbons-hidden-secrets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fun tour of some of the biggest sites in Lisbon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a gorgeous look at the different districts of the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #f7941d;\">4 \u2013 <b>Castelo de S\u00e3o Jorge<\/b><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/P-Castelo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8696 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/P-Castelo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"837\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you love castles, you\u2019re in luck \u2014 Lisbon has a fascinating Moorish hilltop castle that dominates the skyline. Much of it dates from the 14th century or earlier, and it\u2019s rife with Portuguese history, having been the seat of power in the country for over 400 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside, you\u2019ll find a royal palace \u2014 or <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/castelodesaojorge.pt\/site\/en\/history\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what\u2019s left of it since the 1755 earthquake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 gardens, and a sweeping 360-degree view of the entire city. <\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #f7941d;\">5 \u2013 Alfama<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/P-Alfama.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8697\" src=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/P-Alfama.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"837\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alfama is Lisbon\u2019s oldest district; the city actually started here before spreading to its current limits. And while much of Lisbon was destroyed during the 1755 earthquake \u2014 one of the deadliest in history \u2014 Alfama remained mostly unscathed, making it a relic of medieval life. It later gained a reputation as the poor area of town, mostly housing sailors. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Alfama is known for its labyrinthine streets and old, medieval buildings on slim cobblestoned paths.
