Knowing what to expect in South Africa can help you avoid some of the little stresses that go along with travel and spend more time on what you came for: life-changing experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some tips for making sure you\u2019re ready for your trip to South Africa:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What do I need to know about South Africa?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Formal name: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Republic of South Africa<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Capitals: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Cape Town<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Prime Minister:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cyril Ramaphosa<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Religion:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mostly Christian<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Time zone: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coordinated Universal Time (EST+7)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Currency: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South African rand (ZAR)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What do I need to know about South African culture?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Language: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Africa has 11 official languages, with Zulu being the most common first language. Many South Africans speak Afrikaans, and many speak English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s okay if you have no knowledge of the many languages spoken there \u2014 tour guides will help you navigate, and it\u2019s not hard to get around without knowing the language, especially since many South Africans speak at least some English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Etiquette: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You generally won\u2019t find etiquette in South Africa to be much different from what you experience at home. People shake hands as a greeting. When in doubt, look around you and get a sense of what locals are doing, or ask your tour guide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Holidays: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your trip happens to fall during a holiday, this can be an excellent way to interact with locals during your free time, though it may affect business hours for shops and sites. Check out a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Public_holidays_in_South_Africa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calendar of South African holidays<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to see if any of them overlap with your trip dates.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What about health and safety?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Safety: <\/b>As of this post, the Government of Canada has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/destinations\/south-africa\">listed<\/a>\u00a0South Africa as a country where you should \u201cexercise a high degree of caution.\u201d<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0That means keeping an eye on your luggage and wallet, staying with your group if you\u2019re with a tour, and generally being aware of your surroundings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The high crime rates in South Africa have made headlines in the past few years, but high-crime areas are usually more rural and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/traveltips.usatoday.com\/south-africa-safe-visit-1222.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less touristy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Places where tourists venture are generally safer, but you should never walk alone at night, and avoid carrying large sums of money. Click on the government link above for more safety tips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Africans drive on the <\/span><b>left<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Be careful when crossing the street; just like when you were little, be sure to look both ways, every time. If you go on safari, be sure to follow your guide\u2019s directions and don\u2019t try to engage with the animals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Health:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You do not need to have any vaccines (other than what\u2019s routine in Canada, like the MMR vaccine) to travel to South Africa, but it is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/destinations\/traveler\/none\/south-africa?s_cid=ncezid-dgmq-travel-single-001\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that you get vaccinated against Hepatitis A and Typhoid. Talk to your doctor about what they recommend for you depending on your health and the area you\u2019ll be visiting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should avoid drinking tap or well water (drink bottled water instead) and eating any fruits or vegetables that haven\u2019t been thoroughly washed and peeled. Protect against bug bites on safari by wearing long sleeves, pants, and closed-toed shoes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Weather: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Africa\u2019s summer is from September to May, with winter coming in from June to August. During summer, temperatures range from the 60s to the 80s, and in the winter they range from the 40s to the 60s. Before you go, check out the weather for the specific areas you\u2019ll be visiting, and pack accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Food: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Africa has very diverse cuisine, consisting of mostly meat dishes. If you\u2019re a vegetarian, you can generally find options as long as you\u2019re in a touristy area. If you venture beyond the big cities, though, it can be more difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How do I use my phone in South Africa?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>International calling: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number to call for emergency services is 10111. To call Canada from South Africa, dial 001, and then the number, starting with the area code. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For information on how international calling works for your cellular provider, contact them directly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>WiFi: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your hotels will probably offer WiFi, but it\u2019s always good to check ahead. WiFi will be more common in larger, more touristy cities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Adaptors: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You <\/span><b>will <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">need a power adaptor when you travel to South Africa. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/VCT-VP110-Universal-Travel-Adapter\/dp\/B000WU2VTG\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buy one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that\u2019s specific to the country, or get a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Power-Plug-Adapter-International-Countries\/dp\/B07DZX3PLK\/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=electronics&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1544720398&amp;sr=1-1-spons&amp;keywords=universal+power+adapter&amp;psc=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">universal adaptor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that will work anywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What do I need to get in, out, and around South Africa?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Passport and visa: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your passport must be valid for 30 days following the duration of your stay in South Africa. Visas are not required if you are staying in the country for less than 90 days. Make sure you have two blank pages in your passport; if you don\u2019t, you may need to get a new one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Customs: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t try to bring any raw beans, or fruits or vegetables back into Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Money: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Africa uses the rand (R). Be sure to carry at least some rand around. Other types of paper currency won\u2019t be accepted, though credit cards from Canada are accepted at many locations. Check with your bank to see if you\u2019ll be charged a fee for using your card abroad, and definitely notify them of your tour dates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xe.com\/currencyconverter\/convert\/?Amount=1&amp;From=CAD&amp;To=ZAR\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exchange rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Canadian dollars to rand before you go, and if you decide to change money, make sure the rate is favorable.
