Get your bearings in the City of Light before starting class. On the first day, you\u2019ll meet your tour director, who will show you around <\/span><b>Montmartre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the highest point of the city and site of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Commune-of-Paris-1871\">uprising of the Paris Commune<\/a> in 1871.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/moulinrouge-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7754 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/moulinrouge-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Moulin Rouge\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Now, it\u2019s most famous for the birth of cabaret and its reputation as an artists\u2019 quarter in the 19th-20th centuries (Renoir once called it home). Today, the area still boasts some of the city\u2019s best caf\u00e9s and cabarets, including Le Chat Noir and Moulin Rouge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacre-coeur-montmartre.com\/english\/\"><b>Sacre Coeur<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Roman Catholic church at the top of the hill. Completed in 1914, the beautiful domed basilica is considered national penance for the defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can still see street artists at the nearby <\/span><b>Place du Tertre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a colorful square in the area, and music and dance still thrive at the <\/span><b>Moulin Rouge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You\u2019ll notice the big red windmill (moulin rouge means \u201cred windmill\u201d), which was rebuilt in 1921 after being burned down in 1915.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>French history<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you\u2019re a bona fide Parisian, it\u2019s time to start your French classes! Day one focuses on history \u2014 review your history vocabulary before seeing some of Paris\u2019 biggest historical sites. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/eiffel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7755 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/eiffel.jpg\" alt=\"Eiffel Tower\" width=\"211\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a>You\u2019ll have plenty to talk about when you ascend the <\/span><b>Eiffel Tower<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/rr\/print\/coll\/250_paris.html\">1889 World\u2019s Fair entry<\/a> that was considered an eyesore at the time. Today, it\u2019s a French icon and is one of the most-visited monuments in the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Named for designer Gustave Eiffel, the 1,000-foot tower has three levels, each containing shops and restaurants and excellent views of the city. The first balcony features a clear floor (for looking down) and the names of 72 French scientists and engineers appear around the perimeter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, see the city from the water on an incredible hour-long cruise along the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Seine-River\"><b>River Seine<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Seine cuts right through Paris, dividing the city in half. See the Musee d\u2019Orsay and the Eiffel Tower rising up on the Left Bank, and the walls of the Louvre and the Arc de Troimphe on the Right Bank. A guide will point out other monuments and architectural marvels as you pass under beautiful arched bridges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, use your history vocabulary on a tour director-led treasure hunt in the <\/span><b>Ile de la Cit\u00e9<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a natural island in the Seine and home of Notre-Dame Cathedral. Watch your students gain confidence in their French during this adventure, where they complete activities and solve clues in this city center. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>French culture<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Day two of class will help your students hone their culture vocabulary before diving deep into French culture at the beautiful <\/span><b>Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a 17th-century chateau for a marquis under Louis XIV, who later used the architecture as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelandleisure.com\/blogs\/meet-the-chateau-that-inspired-versailles\">inspiration for Versailles<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walk through the ornately decorated grounds, and then step into the shoes of the French elite with a lesson in French dining etiquette, formal table-setting, and the norms for behavior at a formal soir\u00e9e.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have your etiquette chops, finish off your day with a homemade dinner with a local French family. Watch your students practice their French skills with Parisian locals. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>French art<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">French art takes center stage in day three of class. Get a refresher in art vocabulary, then put your knowledge to use at the world\u2019s largest art museum, the incredible <\/span><b>Louvre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/louvre.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7756 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/louvre.jpg\" alt=\"The Louvre\" width=\"250\" height=\"186\" \/><\/a>Walk through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.architectmagazine.com\/awards\/aia-honor-awards\/louvre-pyramid-the-folly-that-became-a-triumph_o\">the translucent pyramid<\/a> that dominates the center of the Louvre. Though it\u2019s become synonymous with the Louvre at this point, the giant clear pyramid wasn\u2019t completed until 1989.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, head to the museum itself, home to over 35,000 works of art. Originally built in the 12th and 13th century, the museum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.louvre.fr\/en\/histoirelouvres\/history-louvre\/periode-2\">began as a fortress<\/a>, and became a place to display the royal collection after Louis XIV decided not to live there. Tour the enormous and majestic building, and see some of the world\u2019s priceless works of art, including the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, La Libert\u00e9 Guidant le Peuple, and Winged Victory. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your tour director will guide you through the Louvre\u2019s biggest sites, but you\u2019ll also get to practice your French with a scavenger hunt that will put your students on the move with something new to find at every turn. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>French gastronomy<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Day four of class focuses on French food. Spend the rest of the day enjoying French\u2019s famous culinary treats, like gourmet cheese and chocolate. Your tour director will take you through Parisian neighbourhoods where you\u2019ll sample plenty of both, and then learn cooking in the French fashion with a class taught by a local chef.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>French theater<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your final day of class focuses on french theater. After class, take part in a fun theater workshop.
