On this Remembrance Day, as a record number of Canadians prepare to visit Europe for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, we\u2019ve assembled a collection of must-see historic sites, monuments and museums to enhance your students\u2019 understanding of the greatest wars in our nation\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3262\" src=\"http:\/\/www.explorica.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Canadian_History_Travel_Guide.gif\" alt=\"canadian_history_travel_guide\" width=\"1170\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #26a5df;\"><strong>Imperial War Museums<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe IWM focuses on the war efforts of Britain and Commonwealth forces. The 5 unique branches are IWM London, IWM Duxford, IWM North in Manchester, HMS Belfast,\u00a0and Churchill War Rooms also in London.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #26a5df;\"><strong>Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nFallen Canadian soldiers were buried here by the Germans. The\u00a0headstones have been placed back-to-back in long double rows,\u00a0reflecting typical German burials but unlike any other Commonwealth war cemetery.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #26a5df;\"><strong>Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nLocated near Tyne Cot National Cemetery, this memorial commemorates the 100 days in which half a million casualties fell, only gaining eight kilometers of ground.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #26a5df;\"><strong>Juno Beach Centre<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThis is the only museum in France dedicated solely to Canada\u2019s extensive role in Operation Overlord. Beny-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery is located nearby.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #26a5df;\"><strong>In Flanders Field Museum<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe museum is housed in the rebuilt Cloth Hall of Ypres and presents the story of WWI in the West Flanders front region. The Menin Gate Memorial is located nearby.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #26a5df;\"><strong>Tyne Cot National Cemetery<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world stands near the farthest point in Belgium that was reached by Commonwealth forces before the final advance to victory.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #26a5df;\"><strong>National Liberation Museum<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nExperience the sights and sounds of the Netherlands\u2019 liberation on the famous battlegrounds of Operation Veritable, The Rhineland Offensive and Operation Market Garden.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #26a5df;\"><strong>Nazi Party Rally Grounds<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nIntended to demonstrate National Socialist power to the world, this historic\u00a0area contains gigantic buildings where Nazi Party rallies were held.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #26a5df;\"><strong>Dachau Memorial Site<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe first Nazi\u00a0concentration camp in Germany, Dachau was originally intended for political prisoners but grew to include forced\u00a0labour, and eventually the imprisonment of anyone deemed a criminal.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #26a5df;\"><strong>Cassino Memorial<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nLocated within the Cassino War Cemetery, this memorial commemorates the 4,000 casualties of the 1944 advance on the German defenses of Rome, but whose Vimy Monument graves are unknown.<\/p>\n<p>See more Canadian history experiences that you can share with your students on <span style=\"color: #f99901;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #f99901;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.explorica.ca\/canadian-history.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">explorica.ca\/history<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The conversations we start on Remembrance Day can and should span all year long.\u00a0Visitors to modern-day Europe can find ample reminders of a time when the continent was bitterly divided into Allied, Axis, Central and neutral powers.
